FOREIGN EXCHANGE GRANT (AUSLANDSSTIPENDIUM)

In this action only stays abroad of regular students up to a maximum duration of 6 months can be funded.

Funded projects

  • Subject-specific courses abroad (e.g. joint programs, study exchanges, internships - outside ERASMUS+)
  • Artistic and scientific work abroad (e.g. research - longer than 1 month)
  • Grants for costs abroad (e.g. project, exhibition, etc.)
  • NOT elegible for Marshall Plan Grant
  • NO ERASMUS+ extensions (Zero Grant)
  • NO (group)trips
  • NO destinations with a travel warning from level 4.

Reference rates

The reference rates are EUR 400.- per month for countries within Europe and EUR 800.- per month for overseas; however, the maximum amount paid out is limited to EUR 2,400.-. The granting of the scholarship is in any case depending on the budgetary means of the university and the number of applications. Accordingly, there will be no guarantee.

Travel Advice

A word of advice based on current circumstances: Visas and other travel documents are subject to strict controls - especially when entering countries such as the USA and the UK. Please note that there are different visa categories depending on the purpose of your stay: An internship may require a different visa than a study visit! It is also important to remember that a visa is not a guarantee of entry – the final decision is always made by border officials.
Students abroad are ambassadors of the Angewandte! Your behavior abroad reflects on all members of our university – please help us to maintain good relations with our partner institutions and inform yourself in advance about the social, cultural and legal conditions in your host country.
For safety reasons, Austrian citizens may consider registering their stay abroad with the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (link to the Foreign Service App). Citizens of other countries should contact the embassy or consulate of their home country.

Application requirements

  • Regular students at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. You have to be enrolled during your stay abroad.
  • Permanent residence and center of vital interests (e.g. profession, studies) must be in Austria.
  • The application should be handed in before your mobility.
  • Planned projects must be related to your studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
  • Only mobilities outside the Erasmus+ program are funded, even if the Erasmus+ mobility is zero grant.
  • Funding period: 2 days - 6 months

  • Online application form (After you filled in the form, you will receive an automated e-mail with a file-drop link for your documents to upload. Please also check your spam folder.)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation (if the number of characters in the online form is not sufficiant)
  • One letter of recommendation from professors of our university: list of eligible professors (PHD students submit only ONE letter of recommendation from the primary supervisor)
  • Transcript of records and/or last degree certificate
  • Proof of permanent residence in Austria according to a current Meldezettel. (Exception: PhD students, see below.)
  • Only for PhD students: Proof that the start of your journey abroad lies in Vienna, e.g. airplane, bus or train tickets. (Can be handed in later in exceptions.)
  • Proof of acceptance at the host institution (confirmation of supervision, confirmation of unpaid internships is mandatory, ...). Can be handed-in later in exceptions.
  • Antrag auf Vorausbescheid (study mobility) / (internship) (Current form must be downloaded from the website of the Dean of Studies. Can be handed-in later in exeptions.).
  • If you are abroad for more than two months, you will have to fill out Form 01 after submitting your application and Form 01.1 after the acceptance by your host university/internship institution via our Mobility Platform. Further information can be found here.

(Note: Unfortunately, you will not receive a confirmation e-mail when you drop your file. We will review your application within two weeks after the deadline and let you know if your application is complete. Please check your mailbox and spam folder during this time, as incomplete applications cannot be considered in the decision.)

You will be informed about the outcome of your application after 4-6 weeks.

NOTE: For the semester(s) in which the stay(s) abroad fall(s), no tuition fees (in case of a study mobility or internship / min 2 months) have to be paid at the host university as well as at the Angewandte. The Student union-fee has to be paid in any case. If your stay abroad cannot be realized, the university's tuition-fee (if applicable) must be paid to the Angewandte.

AFTER COMPLETION of the mobility

  • 1 confirmation (transcript of records, job reference, etc.)
  • 1 personal report (1-3 pages)
  • if applicable, 1 Anerkennungsbescheid (study exchanges and internships)
must be uploaded to our Mobility Platform. Please fill out For 04 -- otherwise, the grant will be reclaimed!

Equality for Mobility (EfM) - Grant

The Equality for Mobility (EfM) grant supports short-term mobilities for students with care responsibilities, students with disabilities, and/or students with economic barriers - preferably without prior experience abroad - in order to create economic equity among students in terms of mobility experiences.

Funding duration 2 days to 5 months (one semester)
Funding amount* is a maximum of EUR 2.400 (in addition to the Foreign Exchange Grant or the Erasmus+ Scholarship)

Application requirements** 

Equality for Mobility (EfM) can be applied for by regular students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna exclusively in connection with an application for the Foreign Exchnage Grant (“Auslandsstipendium”) or an Erasmus+ Scholarship**.

In addition to a positive confirmation of the planned project abroad (e.g. confirmation of a stay abroad at a university, internship, research activity, etc.), one of the factor(s) for the granting of the (EfM) scholarship must be applicable and must be supported by detailed justification and any supporting documents:

  • Childcare responsibilities / other caregiving responsibilities / support payments
  • Impairment (disability, chronic physical or mental illness)
  • Economic obstacles

* Equality for Mobility (EfM) is distributed to applicants twice a year, transparently and on a pro rata basis according to the jury's decision, and is subject to an internal maximum scale. Guidelines for a stay abroad of 3 months or more, whereby the granting of the scholarship is in any case dependent on the budgetary means of the university: Low (EUR 800 with child or impairment, excl. economic obstacles), Medium (EUR 1.600 economic obstacles without further factors), High (EUR 2.400 at least 2 factors must apply).

** If a study stay or internship is funded by Erasmus+, the Erasmus+ grant will be applied for directly by the EU  or the Austrian study allowance (Österreichische Studienbehilfe). Funding in case of economic obstacles can be applied in exceptions from the EfM and will be individually revised. Erasmus+ participants who extend their stay cannot apply for EfM!

*** CV must be submitted additionally if not applied for the Foreign Exchange Grant.

**** Evidence can be: Confirmation of the hardship fund of the Student Union within the last 3 semesters, proof of childcare or other care obligations, alimony payments, latest bank statements of the past three months, study allowance, disability certificate or medical certificate (incl. proof of extra costs), proof of self-financed studies (working student) etc.

Marshall Plan - Scholarship

Funded by the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation, an academic exchange program was established to finance scholarships and fellowships for academic exchange between Austria and the U.S. The program is focused only on research in the field of technical sciences.

  • Duration: min. 3 months
  • Award: EUR 4.000,- to EUR 10.000,- (see scholarship calculations)
  • Submission deadline: 3. March - 21. April 2025 (internal deadline) (earliest start of studies August 2025), the next submission deadline is September/October 2025 with the earliest start date in January 2026.
  • Submission and pre-clarification: International Office / Alexander Draxl, PhD (On leave until August 2025: Mag.a Veronika Merklein)
  • Marshall Plan scholars are NOT eligable for EfM (Equality for Mobility Grant)!

  • Regular Master- and Doctoral students as well as Diploms students (2. section) of the University of Applied Arts Vienna
  • Study programmes: Architecture, Conservation and Restoration, Art x Science School for Transformation, Art & Science, Industrial Design, Digital Art, Experimental Game Cultures, Doctoral Programmes in Natural and Technical Sciences and Artistic Research PhD Programme
  • The submitted research project must have a technical background.

  • Project description (1,500 - 2,500 words) incl. title of research project, supervisor at home university, supervisor at host university, short description of research agenda, general goals, detailed description of research problem, methodological considerations, workflow, relevance and expected results

  • OPTIONAL: Letters of recommendation, list of publications, list of lectures

General databases


Foreign scholarships that are financed from Austrian federal funds or from funds from the European Commission for the same activity may not be received at the same time as the Erasmus + mobility grant due to the prohibition of double funding.
