University Gallery of the Angewandte

The University Gallery of the Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna) in Heiligenkreuzerhof provides a platform for art and cultural studies as well as artistic practice. The close ties to research and teaching as well as the collaboration with Collection and Archive of the University of Applied Arts Vienna are the basis for exhibitions, programmes, open formats and publications that deal with current issues regarding art and society. Works of art from the collection serve as references to historical and contemporary topics and allow access to cross-disciplinary areas of art, architecture, design, and fashion while embedded in an international context and linked to extensive networks.

The University Gallery’s premises within the Baroque complex of the Heiligenkreuzerhof have been used by the University of Applied Arts Vienna since 1938. The former prelature of Heiligenkreuz Abbey and the adjoining Sala Terrena initially served as studio spaces; since the 1980s, following the completion of extensive restoration work, they have been used for exhibitions, symposia, and lectures.

The program is determined by an advisory board composed of members of the University of Applied Arts Vienna with proven experience in the field of exhibitions. The board includes a representative appointed by the Rectorate, a representative of Collection and Archive, an artist nominated by the Department of Art and Knowledge Transfer, the head of the University Gallery of the Angewandte, a study assistant nominated by Collection and Archive, and a student representative nominated by the Students’ Union. The advisory board’s term of office corresponds to that of the Rectorate.
