Wie Studierende der Software Conservation künftigen Generationen Gaming-Kunst zugänglich machen

Während Gemälde Jahrhunderte überdauern, altern digitale Werke schnell. Hardware wird nicht mehr hergestellt, Programmiersprachen veralten oder Server gehen offline. Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien entwickelt im neuen Studiengang Software Conservation Methoden, um Indie Computerspiele aus Österreich zu sammeln und zu erhalten. In Kooperation mit dem SoftwareLAB des Technischen Museums Wien wird so sichergestellt, dass die Games auch in Zukunft spielbar sind.

On 3 July, the graduates of the 2026 summer semester celebrated their graduation and doctoral degrees in the atrium of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Following a welcome speech by Rector Ulrike Kuch, alumna Miriam Unterthiner (Institute of Language Arts) delivered the keynote address. Musical performances were provided by Milde Sorte (featuring Schleuse, REX69 and Stumpi). The University of Applied Arts Vienna joins its alums in celebrating this occasion and wishes them all the very best for the future!

In collaboration with Austria’s art universities, Ö1 is once again seeking talented young artists this year. The scholarship, worth 10,000 euros, is being awarded for the 19th time this year.

OeAD | Africa-UniNet Awards Thinking Soil & Water Project

We extend our warmest congratulations to Başak Şenova (Department of Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education at the University of Applied Arts Vienna), who, together with Johan Thom (University of Pretoria), has been awarded an Africa-UniNet grant for the research project Thinking Soil & Water. The project will run from September 2026 to September 2028.

Pride is a Riot!

Hanna Hofmann’s design for this year’s Pride flag reclaims Pride’s radical roots, referencing the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, where Black and Latinx trans women, lesbians, drag queens, and gay men fought back against oppression. The slogan “Pride is a Riot” asserts that LGBTQ+ liberation remains an ongoing struggle, not just a celebration.

Introduction of the new Department of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

With the start of Pride Month, the new team of the Department of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion — the DEI-Office for short — under the leadership of Gerhild Steinbuch (Vice-Rector for Cooperative Disciplinarity, Engagement and Innovation) introduces itself. As a team, they work toward shaping the Angewandte in a future-ready way that keeps its doors open to as many people as possible.

Janka Kocisek, a student of the Department of Drawing and Printmaking, has created three exclusive designs for Ö1 for “The Ö1 Graphic of the Year”. In addition, three other female students from Austrian art universities submitted their works. The winner will be determined by an online vote. Vote now!

Looking Back: That Was the Show Modeklasse 2026

On June 2, 2026, the Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts presented work by 40 students from the current academic year—the show, held in the university’s atrium on Vordere Zollamtsstraße, featured live performances by performance artist and singer Alex Franz Zehetbauer and drummer, performer, and singer Stina Fors. Under the direction of British designer Craig Green, who has been a professor in the fashion class since 2023, six graduation collections were also presented.

“Austria’s Most Beautiful Books”: State Prize and awards for alumnae and teaching staff of the Angewandte

Several publications by members of the Angewandte community were selected among the 15 “Austria’s Most Beautiful Books 2025” and honoured at an awards ceremony held by the Austrian Publishers and Booksellers Association on 1 June 2026.

Willkommen an der Angewandten, Sophie Thun!

Sophie Thun wurde mit 1. Jänner 2026 zur Universitätsprofessorin für Künstlerische Fotografie am Institut für Bildende und Mediale Kunst der Angewandten berufen. Die Künstlerin arbeitet vorwiegend mit Techniken der analogen Fotografie, deren Räumen, Prozessen sowie Produktions- und Ausstellungsbedingungen.
