Hardly any other
element of the analogue photographic process is as distinctive as the colour negative. Its enigmatic orange masking is still
etched in the visual memory of many. Even the most trained eyes cannot guess the original colours of the subject captured.
By engaging with a colour negative, Caroline Heider, Ruth Horak,
Lisa Rastl and Claudia Rohrauer once again explore the peculiarities of photography. Taking their cue from a
group photograph featuring women and cameras, they work with the negative in their new self-portrait series, are literally
within the negative, and perform alongside it.
“How strange it is in the negative! We wear suits in complementary colours
and prepare what the negative demands.”
